Xochimilco & Other Information

Hello - Our Wednesday night work-outs are done for the year, but we will be meeting this Wednesday at 5:30 at the Xochimilco on Iles (by Jimmy John's and Office Max). If you're planning on coming, could you send me an email (kmtice@hotmail.com)? I'll get there a little early to get the tables. Everyone is invited to come eat and hang out - it will be very informal.

Other Information (thanks Jim C!)
1. The following positions on the SRRC board are open: president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, membership and newsletter. Anyone interested in these positions should contact Susan Helm or any current member of the board. The treasurer's position is open immediately.

2. Jordan Bartolazzi was featured as a scholar-athlete in yesterday's State Journal-Register. Yay Jordan!!!!

3. 69 year old SRRC member Jim Lewis finished the New York City Marathon in 5:26:01.

4. Members of public radio WUIS should bring their membership cards to Xochimilco on Wednesday night for buy one get one free. (Obviously, that reminder is from Jim ;)

Anyway, hope to see you on Wednesday! Nothing beats a good margarita :)

The Grand Finale - October 28

Well, unfortunately, tomorrow is our last Wednesday night work-out of 2009. We will meet at the SHG Track at 5:30 and do a final time trial - 3200 meters then a 1600 meters. It will be very informal. You can choose to do one or both, but I'm assuming most people will do both. It will probably be dark by the end, so we might just want to do our cool-down on the track.

Then, next Wednesday - November 4 - for anyone who is interested, I thought we could grab some food and drinks at Xochimilco (the one on Iles by the Jimmy John's), since our work-outs will be over. Let's plan to meet at 5:30. I'll have Jay, so feel free to bring you kids, too. We can put them at a table together :)

Thanks to everyone who has participated in the work-outs this year!! It is always a fun group!

Other Information
1. Congratulations to Carl and his family!! Carl is a Grandpa, again! His daughter had twin boys last week. Carl's son is in my Intermediate Accounting class, and he told me their names last night, but now I can't remember. I think they start with a "C" - How helpful is that? ;)

2. Some of you have noticed in the LLCC Spring Course Schedule that I'm teaching a Wednesday night class next Spring semester. The class will be done by the time we move to the SHG Track in May. However, during April when we have the work-outs in Washington Park, we basically have two options 1) we could move the work-outs to Tuesday or 2) we could have someone else lead the work-outs while they are in Washington Park. Opinions? Regardless, I am planning that we will be back at the SHG Track at 5:30 on Wednesdays by mid-May.

3. Several of you have asked about the meat reimbursement. Barb dropped off a check from the SRRC this week, so it is all taken care of :) Thank you!!

That's all I can think of for now! Hope to see you tomorrow & next Wednesday!

Work-Out for Tonight - October 21

Hello -
I'm sorry I didn't send this out sooner!! Tonight and next Wednesday are our final Wednesday night work-outs of the year. Today, we will meet at 5:30 and after a warm-up lap together, we will run a work-out of 600's. Run 600 meters hard, then recover by walking 100 meters slowly. I was thinking we would do this for about 30-35 minutes and then re-group.

For those of you who are feeling ambitious (probably not me!), this work-out is from the noon group's track work-out. Jim C. added the comment at the end :)

6 x 600 The first 400 is at your 5K pace, then pick up the pace for the last 200. This workout teaches you how to change gears and go from fast to faster when you are tired. For those of us still recovering from our marathons, we can start slow and slow down for the last 200.

I'll have Jay with me tonight, so I'll have to do my cool-down on the track, but the rest of the group can run to Lawrence and back.

Other Information
1. Congrats to the Indy Marathon runners!! Patty S. ran a 3:46:22, Janet P. ran a 3:52:10, Tim M. ran a 4:00:04, Mary Fairclough WON her age group in 4:03:02, Pam E. ran 4:04:20 and Molly S. ran 4:18:05. Who am I missing?

2. I forgot to mention last week, but Karen F. ran a 13:00 PR at Chicago!

Hope to see you tonight,
Katie

Work-Out for Tomorrow & Another Rant ;)

Hello! I'm back from Kansas! I had a great time, and it was nice to know that many of you were concerned about my safety. I feel our group really looks out for each other - even when it involves dating and not running ;)

Anyway, it is Marathon time!! Who's going to Chicago? Jamie, Jim C (as a pacer), who else? I believe Patty and Molly are going to Indianapolis on the 17th?

This week we'll do a work-out of all 800's. After our warm-up lap together, we'll do repeats consisting of 800 meters hard and then walk 100 meters slowly to recover. We will continue to do this for 30-35 minutes. After that, we'll re-group for the cool-down to Lawrence and back.

Other Information
1. I saw in the latest board minutes that 4 board members voted against reimbursing me $100 for expenses related to the picnic. It seems odd to me that the Board would pay $30,000 for a tag timing system, which no one has even figured out to use (and given the size of most of our races, I would question the necessity of this sysem), and then, some board members don't want to pay $100 for meat for a club picnic. And, this was a club picnic - I made it very clear in all my emails and on my blog that all SRRC members & guests were invited. I would have no problem paying for the meat, but I do think in principle it is petty and perhaps even mean-spirited of the people who voted against it.

I also noticed in the Board minutes, that the Board approved donating $200 to the Halloween Hustle and Trail Trot. Is this a club event? Should club funds be used for this event if there is even a question regarding the use of club funds for activities of club members?

Also, there was a big picnic for Abe's Army and their leaders. It is my understanding that this event was not open to all the club members. I know Abe's Army participants pay a large registration fee which probably does cover the cost of the picnic. However, all the Wednesday night group members pay annual SRRC dues and race quite often, which contributes money back to the club. AND, I would say, if anyone is ever looking for volunteers, all they have to do is ask the Wednesday night group, and people will show up and help. Again, I think showing support for the Wednesday night group would be considerate.

And finally, I have heard that the Board passed a motion which would charge club members to attend Monster Mash this year. So, if I were running well and had spent a couple hundred dollars paying for entry into SRRC circuit races (many of which are quite expensive), if I were a point series winner, I would then have to pay another $10 to come to the banquet to get my award? Or, $20 if I have Jay and don't want to pay for a sitter? Seriously, does the club need to make everything so expensive? I know several runners who are not racing as much because of the increased cost. Whatever happened to running as a low cost sport?

My gosh I've become cantankerous!! And, don't even get me started on races only accepting registration online ;)

2. I have forwarded an email from Peggy regarding a 2 mile fundraiser on October 25.

Hope to see you on Wednesday!

Katie

Work-Out for September 30

Hello! Sorry I am posting this so late. I had mentioned this in a previous blog, but tomorrow we will be doing a time trial. There will be a heat of the 3200, then a heat of the 1600. You can do whichever one you would like, or both. This will be very informal - I won't be recording results. After we get done with the time trials, we'll run the cool-down to Lawrence and back.

Other Information
1. I had fun at the cook-out on Saturday! It was nice to hang out. Lots of good food, and Jim C's vegan pumpkin cheesecake was seriously one of the best things I have ever tasted! If I were ever going to cook, I would make it ;) Anyway, here's the recipe, if you are interested...

Pumpkin Cheesecake
12 oz. firm silken tofu, pureed
8 oz. nondairy cream cheese (try Tofutti brand at Tofutti.com)
1 cup canned pumpkin
1 cup granulated sugar
3 Tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 prepared graham cracker crust

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Purée all the ingredients except the pie crust in a food processor and pour into the graham cracker crust. Bake at 350°F for 50 minutes. Allow to cool for 30 minutes, cover with plastic wrap or the top of the pie container.

2. The Heroes Run for Hope 5 Miler is in Chatham on Saturday. This is an SRRC points series race. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Jenni ASAP.

That's all I've got. We'll be continuing on Wednesday nights through October 28.

Hope to see you tomorrow!

Work-Out for Sept. 23

Hello! Tomorrow we will meet at 5:30 pm at the SHG Track for a work-out of 1600 meter repeats. The plan will be to do progressive 1600's, meaning that you run each 1600 a little bit faster (maybe 10 seconds) than the previous one. We will run 3 1600's with approximately a 4:00-5:00 rest between. All of the 1600's will start and end at our main start/finish line. After 35-40 minutes we will re-group. Some of the faster runners who are training for a fall marathon may be able to get in 4 repeats.

After we re-group, we will run the cool-down to Lawerence and back.

Other Information
1. The picnic is Saturday, Sept. 26 at Lake Park - Shelter 6. It will start around 4:00 pm. Helen & Cooper are letting us use their grill (thank you!!!), and meat, buns, plates and condiments will be provided. However, I could REALLY use some volunteers to help grill. To entice someone to help me out, I will bring the beer for whoever grills. Fair? If you want to volunteer ahead of time, you can tell me what beer you'd like. Otherwise, it will be a surprise.

Again, EVERYONE in the SRRC is invited to the picnic. If you haven't RSVP'ed please let me know if you are planning to attend. Also, if you are able, please bring a dish to share and your own drinks.

Several people have asked if there is a cost to come to the picnic. There is not. The Board voted at the last meeting to pay for the cost of the meat. Thank you to the Board members who supported this motion!! Since the club has $38,934 in total cash (per the July Board minutes), I feel spending $100 on meat for a picnic to which all club members are invited is an appropriate use of funds. Also, while there was a picnic for Abe's Army this year, there was not a picnic for the rest of us. So anyway, I hope to see you on Saturday!

2. In my email last week, I did not mention that Joy was the OVERALL female winner of the Lake Erie Half-Marathon the week before. Great job Joy!!!

3. How was Shoreline? I haven't heard any results.

4. The Heroes Run for Hope 5 Mile race is Oct. 3 in Chatham. Jenni had posted this as a comment on a previous blog, but I'm not sure everyone saw it....

I have multiple opportunities to help, both pre-race and race day for both runners and non-runners. I am also holding a "tent raising party" on Thursday, Oct 1st in Chatham Community Park. I have a 22x44' event tent to shelter the donor drive people. After the tent is up, we are all going over to Xoci's for margaritas! Just show up at the park around 5:30 and lend a hand. Bring a sledghammer if you have one! email me if you're interested in volunteering for any of these options. mobile.jennig@gmail.com

OK - that's all I've got!

See you tomorrow
KT
